The process of having a baby is essentially an natural process and the experience ethereal for the expectant parents. On the contrary the dreaded 'high risk pregnancy' could well translate into a nightmare for some of us. The good news is that high risk pregnancy need not be all that disconcerting, considering the fact that all it means is that you need to be careful through the period and adhere to the the precautions and the cautions as voiced and communicated to you by your healthcare provider.

THE HIGH RISK DEFINITION

'High Risk' is just your doctor's way of communicating that you need to be extra cautious in the weeks to come so as to ensure that the risk to you and your baby is minimized during the period of gestation. If so classifed you would need to ensure that you consult a specialist and follow instructions to the letter.

RISK FACTORS AND HIGH RISK

Your doctor will classify you as a high risk pregnancy based on the presence of some or more of these factors:

PRE – EXISTING MEDICAL CONDITIONS

It is not rare for a woman to be suffering from certain medical conditions before she gets pregnant. If you are suffering from a medical condition like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, autoimmune disorders or HIV, the risk of defects in your baby could be high.Concurrently the presence of past history of miscarriage or family history of genetic defects also classifies an expectant mother as 'high – risk'.

AGE
If you are less than 17 or more than 35 years of age at the time of conception your doctor would consider you as high risk pregnancy. This is scarcely amazing considering the fact that you would have a higher probabiltiy of having miscarriages and genetic defects like 'Downs Syndrome'.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS CONTACTED DURING PREGNANCY

One of the commonest occurrences is for a pregnant woman to contact a medical conditon during the course of her pregnancy. To illustrate the case in fact, if you should get diagnosed with preeclampsia or pregnancy induced hypertension, as this condition is better known, your doctor may classify you as a high risk pregnancy. The condition can prove dangerous for both the mother and the baby if neglected. On the contrary when treated with medications and diet, the mother usually delivers a healthy baby. It is scarcely amazing then that when diagnosed with preeclampsia the doctor invarialby classifies the expectant mother as a high risk pregnancy.

PREGNANCY INDUCED COMPLICATIONS

In some instances the mother contacts some complications which are due to the pregnancy and has little or nothing to do with the health of the mother. The commonest being a low lying planceta or multiple births.
